Son of Sterling, Kan., Pastor Killed in Two-Vehicle Crash

Canton, Kan. — Joshua Harder, 12-year-old son of David and Karen Harder, Sterling, was killed Oct. 5 in a two-vehicle accident nine miles south of canton on a McPherson County road.

David Harder, pastor of the Evangelical Mennonite Church, Sterling, and son of the late Waldo and Abbie Harder, suffered chest trauma and fractured ribs in the accident and was listed in serious condition at St. Francis Regional Center, Wichita, Oct. 6.

Harder's wife, Karen, was treated for a broken collarbone at a Newton hospital and released.

The couple's 11-year-old daughter, Susan was transferred from Bethel Deaconess hospital, Newton, to St. Francis with a broken jaw and possible fractured pelvis.

Three-year-old Jonathan Harder was admitted to Axtell christian Hospital, Newton, for treatment of bruises.

According to McPherson County Undersheriff Lary Powell, the Harder vehicle was eastbound on a township road when it entered an intersection and was struck on the left side by a vehicle driven by Richard Mayer, Gypsum. Mayer was uninjured in the crash, said Powell.
