WHITEWATER MAN KILLED BY LIGHTNING

An unusual tragedy came to the Whitewater community last Friday shortly after 12 o'clock, when Henry C. Harder was killed instantly at his home there by a bolt of lightning.

Threatening clouds had gathered, although there appeared no immediate prospect for rain, and the bold which killed Mr. Harder seems to have been the only one which struck in that vicinity at that time.

Mr. Harder and his aged father, John Harder, Sr., were on the way to the house for dinner when Henry turned back to the barn to look after something he had forgotten. It occurred as he was out in the open farm yard that the bolt struck, killing him instantly. His father who was some distance away, hurried back to him and found him dead.

Funeral services were held at the Emmaus Mennonite church last Monday afternoon. Rev. J. E. Entz of Newton and Rev. Hendrickson of Whitewater officiated at the service.

Mr. Harder is survived by his wife and two children and the following brothers and one sister: Rev. B. W. Harder, John Harder, Jr., G. A. Harder, E. M. Harder, Mrs. Gust. Reimer, and Willie Harder.
