Gas Fumes Cause Death of Couple

FUNERAL SERVICES AT HILLSBORO THURSDAY FOR MR. & MRS. M. E. HARDER

Hillsboro, Kansas. — On Sunday afternoon, Feb. 18, this community learned the tragic news that the bodies of Mr. and Mrs. Martin E. Harder had been found at their farm home two miles south and one-fourth mile west of Hillsboro. Both had apparently been asphyxiated by fumes from a gas heater about 24 hours earlier, according to reports of the investigating officers.

Double funeral services for the couple will be held Thursday afternoon at the Mennonite Brethren church here, where both were members.

The bodies were discovered by a son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Eitzen of Marion, who went to the Harder home after learning that the parents had not attended church services on Sunday morning. An unvented gas stove was still burning and goldfish in a small aquarium in the kitchen also were killed, it was reported.

Mrs. Harder was the former Caroline Seibel. Mr. Harder was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Martin Harder Sr., formerly of Henderson, Nebr.
