AUGUST G. HAHN

August G. Hahn, the son of George and Caroline Steffen Hahn, was born on January 10, 1875, in Summerfield, Illinois. He passed away August 15, 1951, at the age of 76 years, seven months and five days. He had been in poor health for the last year and a half; however, a sudden heart attack caused his death a few minutes after entering the hospital.

His parents moved to the Halstead community when August was only six months of age and settled on a farm three miles south of Halstead. During his early youth his father was killed in an accident, leaving him to support his mother and younger sisters. He had lived in this community for more than 76 years.

He was united in marriage with Caroline Baumgartner of Halstead on March 9, 1901. For nearly 41 years this couple shared joys and sorrows together, his wife passing away on January 10, 1942. Their union was blessed by five children, two sons and three daughters. One daughter, Elsie, passed away early in infancy, leaving the two sons and two daughters who survive him.

He accepted Christ as his Saviour and upon confession of faith, he was received as a member of the First Mennonite church of Halstead on March 9, 1902. He remained a faithful member of this church until his death.

Mr. Hahn leaves to treasure his memory the four children, two daughters, Mrs. Helen Hahn Nacktigal [sic] and Mrs. Martha Stutzman, both of Halstead; two sons, Albert of Lyons and Edwin C. of Sedgwick; three sisters, Mrs. Joseph Marak of Halstead, Mrs. Chas. Hogue of Sylvia and Mrs. Andrew Clark of Los Angeles, California; and one brother, George Haun [sic Hahn] of Sedgwick; also thirteen grandchildren and four great grandchildren, beside a host of other relatives and friends who also mourn his sudden death.

Funeral services for Mr. Hahn were held in the First Mennonite church of Halstead on Sunday afternoon at two-thirty o’clock, August 19. Rev. H. T. Unruh and Rev. David Wedel conducted the final rites. A quartet consisting of Miss Edna Mueller, Mrs. Harvey Voght, Mario Winsky and Milton Ewy sang two of Mr. Hahn’s favorite hymns, “When The Roll Is Called Up Yonder,” and “In The Sweet Bye and Bye.” Mrs. Milton Ewy was at the organ and played “Holy Art Thou” by Handel for the processional. For the postlude, she included the church hymns: "Asleep in Jesus,” "Safe in the Arms of Jesus,” “The Old Rugged Cross,” and "Beneath The Cross of Jesus.” “Father Almighty, Bless Us With Thy Blessing” was the closing number.

The casket bearers were nephews of Mr. Hahn, and included Charles Marak, Laurence Marak, Paul Haun, Howard Haun, Russel Lewis and Gene Nickles. Interment was in the family lot of the Halstead cemetery. The Kaufman Funeral Home of Halstead had charge of the funeral arrangements.
