Central Conference Leader Called In Death
REV. GEORGE L GUNDY WAS SUPT. OF MEADOWS HOME FOR 22 YEARS
Carlock, III. — Funeral services for Rev. George I. Gundy, well known leader in the Central Conference of Mennonites, took place at the Meadows Mennonite church on Sept. 19. Death came after an illness of three weeks.
Rev. Gundy had been pastor of the Meadows church for over a quarter of a century, and during most of that time served also as superintendent of the Meadows old people’s home. He resigned from the superintendency several years ago after 22 years of service. He was a former president and vice-president of the Central Conference and served on a number of conference boards and committees.
Born April 3, 1880, at Carlock, he united with the North Danvers Mennonite church as a young man. After his marriage to Clara Strubhar in 1904 he was chosen minister at the Congerville Mennonite church and continued in the pastorate at that place for 19 years, until called to Meadows.
He is survived by his wife, two sons, Gordon and Donald, and 10 grandchildren. Burial was made at Washington, Ill.

REV. GEORGE I. GUNDY
Rev. George I. Gundy, pastor of the Mennonite church at Meadows, Illinois, passed away Sunday night, Sept. 16 at the home of his son, Donald, at Woodburn, Indiana, after an illness of five weeks. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon, Sept. 19, at the Meadows Mennonite church, with burial in the Washington cemetery.
Officiating ministers were Rev. Lee Lantz of Winona Lake, Indiana, Rev. Lotus Troyer of Carlock, and Rev. Frank Mitchell of Meadows, Illinois. A male quartet composed of Joseph Sommer of Chenoa, Ted Sommer of Pekin, Melvin Norquist of Peoria and Richard Baum of Carlock, sung “Great Is Thy Faithfulness.” I Will Pilot Thee" and “Beyond the Sunset." Miss Ruth Streid accompanied at the organ.
Pallbearers were George Sommer, Jacob Rocke, Orville Bertsche, Jess Streid, Arthur Streid Sr., E. A. Zimmerman, E. J. Raber, and Arthur Bertsche. Honorary pallbearers were member of the Board of Home and Foreign Missions, members of the Board of the Meadows Mennonite Home and visiting ministers.
Rev. George I. Gundy was born April 3, 1880 at Carlock, Illinois a son of Jacob and Helena Kinzinger Gundy. He was united in marriage to Clara Strubhar at Washington, Illinois, on January 6, 1904. He farmed near Washington for 22 years. He was ordained to the ministry on October 4, 1903 and served as pastor of the Congerville Mennonite Church for 15 years.
Rev. Gundy moved to Meadows in 1925, where he served the Meadows Church as pastor until his death. He also served as superintendent of the Meadows Mennonite Home for 22 years, retiring from that position four years ago.
He served for many years on the Board of Home and Foreign Missions and was a member of the Congo Inland Mission Board for nine years, chairman of the Ministerial Committee and a member of the Advisory Committee of the Young People’s Union of the Central Conference.
Survivors are his wife; two sons. Gordon of Graymont, Ill., and Donald of Woodburn, Ind.; a brother Lloyd of Normal; three sisters, Mrs. Lina Garber and Mrs. Ernest Zoll of Carlock and Mrs. J. F. Sakemiller of Bloomington. Ten grandchildren also survive. One son, Ralph, two brothers and four sisters preceded him in death.
