PAUL S. GROSS

Paul S. Gross was born to Sam P. and Anna Hofer Gross on Sept. 7, 1936, on a farm southwest of Bridgewater, S. D. After a lengthy illness, he died Feb. 15, 1999.

Paul graduated from Freeman (S.D.) Junior College and Bethel College in North Newton, Kan.

Upon the confession of his faith in Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior, Paul was baptized Aug. 16, 1963, and became a member of Salem Mennonite Brethren Church of rural Bridgewater.

He married Mary Ann Tschetter on Aug. 12, 1966. Two sons, Mark and Jeral, were born to them.

After college, Paul worked for two years at Mennonite Central Committee in Akron, Pa.

Paul was secretary of the church building committee when the church was built in 1965-66. He also served as church moderator, church council secretary, Sunday school superintendent, youth sponsor, director of music and choir member.

He served on the board of directors of Mennonite Mutual Aid insurance and Freeman Junior College. He was clerk of Pleasant Township for more than 25 years.

He thoroughly enjoyed farming. He was regarded as a progressive farmer who readily adopted new practices and ideas.

In 1988 he was diagnosed with a brain tumor, resulting in three surgeries that year. Through the years his health failed, but his spirit and positive attitude remained strong. He was sustained by his faith in god, dedication of his family and love for music.

Surviving are his wife, Mary Ann; two sons, Mark and his wife Stacy, and Jeral; two sisters, Ida of Sioux Falls and Celia of Hillsboro, Kan. He was preceded n death by a sister, Helen Anne.
