Birth date: 1892 May 9
text of obituary:
Mrs. John G. Gross, nee Anna Pollman, was born to Paul and Anna (Hofer) Pollman near Emery, S. D. May 9, 1892, and passed away March 5, 1959. She reached the age of 66 years, nine months and 26 days.
She grew to womanhood on a farm near Emery and attended the Neu Hutterthal Church of which she became a member upon her confession of faith in Christ. She was baptized by Elder Paul J. Tschetter on July 16, 1911, and remained true to the faith until death. She especially enjoyed the fellowship and work of a women’s missionary circle to which she belonged at the Emmanuel church, where she attended for many years.
On Dec. 22, 1915, she was united in marriage to John G. Gross of Olivet, S. D. Together they established their home on his father’s homestead near Olivet and lived there for the first three years.
In the fall of 1919 they bought and moved to heir present farm seven miles southeast of Onida, S. D. where they shared the joys and sorrows of life for 33 years.
On Jan. 19, 1949, her husband, John, passed away very suddenly.
This union was blessed with six children; three sons and three daughters. One son, Daniel preceded her in death.
After the passing of her husband ten years ago she remained on the farm with her two sons until Oc. 23, 1958, when she became very ill and within a week suffered a cerebral hemorrhage. On Dec. 17, 1958, she was transferred from the Onida hospital to the hospital in Freeman. She showed signs of improvement but on Feb. 17, 1959, she suffered another stroke. This led into static pneumonia from which she passed away.
She leaves to mourn her passing five children: Elizabeth (Mrs. Dave I. Walter) of Freeman; Katherine (Mrs. Merle Bloom) of Chicago, Ill., presently home on a missionary furlough from Africa; Mary (Mrs. William P. Janzen) of Mountain Lake, Minn.; Benny and Johnny of Onida.. Also surviving are two brothers, Joseph of Bridgewater and Paul of Sioux Falls; two sisters, Justina (Mrs. Sam S. Wipf) of Bridgewater and Adina (Mrs. John Joshua Hofer) of Emery; one daughter-in-law and three sons-in-law.
