SUSIE GOSSEN

Susie Gossen was born may 25, 1883, to Johann and Susanna Gossen, nee Toews, near Hillsboro, Kansas in the Gnadenau Community.

She enjoyed her childhood days on the “home place.” Her elementary schooling was likewise obtained in the Gnadenau district school. Her friends and schoolday companions still are mindful of her keen and prayerful interest in the Sunday school at the Ebenfeld church.

In 1907 Rev. John H. Voth from Mountain Lake, Minn., conducted revival meetings at Ebenfeld. It was during this time that Susie accepted Christ Jesus as her personal Saviour. Following her experience with the Lord, she was baptized upon the confession of faith and on May 19, 1907, received into the fellowship of the Mennonite Brethren church at Ebenfeld, to which she remained faithful to the end.

After the departure of her parents Susie resided with her brother, George Gossen, or about 40 years on the home farm. During the last years of her mother’s illness Susie was faithful in caring for her until she went home to be with the Lord.

On June 15, 1950, she entered the Mission Home in Hillsboro where she remained until she became ill. When her condition called for special care she entered the Salem Hospital, Oct. 26, 1954.

On Friday, Nov. 5, 1954, at 10 a.m. she went home to be with her Lord. Susie had a peaceful entry into the portals of glory when she went to meet her Creator. Some of her departing words, spoken in keeping with Phil 1:21-23, were “having a desire to depart and be with Christ; which is far better.”

Her parents, eight brothers and two sisters, preceded her in death. She leaves to mourn her departure her only brother, George Gossen, and a host of Christian friends.
