text of obituary:

MRS. MENNO S. GOERTZEN

Mrs. Gertrude (Unruh) Goertzen, daughter of David H. and Eva (Jantz) Unruh, was born Feb. 14, 1910, at Tampa, Kansas. She departed this life to be forever with her Lord on Dec. 10, 1961 at the home in rural Newton, Kansas. She attained the age of 51 years, nine months, and 26 days.

On May 27, 1928, she was baptized upon the confession of her faith in Jesus Christ as her personal Savior by Rev. John H. Epp and received into the First Mennonite Church of Hillsboro. Several years after her marriage she transferred her membership to the Tabor Mennonite Church, rural Newton. Later she was a member of the First Mennonite Church of Burns for seven years, transferring back to the Tabor Church on May 15, 1951, where she remained active until her death. At the time of her death she was a member of the Tabor Sewing Society.

On May 24, 1929, she was united in marriage with Menno S. Geortzen. This union was blessed with two children, a daughter and a son. The daughter Geraldine Ruth, died in infancy. Also one grandson, Cliffton Lloyd, [sic Clifton Lloyd Goertzen] preceded her in death. In 1959 our parents celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary with relatives and friends at the Tabor Church.

She attended grade school near her parents home in rural Tampa, the Bible Academy in Hillsboro, Kansas for two years, and Hillsboro High School for two years.

Together with her husband, her life was spent on a farm near Goessel. In 1942 they moved to a farm seven miles east of Peabody where they lived until 1949 when they moved back to their farm near Gossel.

She was in good health until the last few years; even then she was very active with a large garden each year. Her special interest was growing flowers.

Her cheerful spirit was felt in many places. She enjoyed doing things for her family, especially her grandchildren who were very dear to her. She was a constant source of encouragement to her family. Her sudden passing will leave a great vacancy in the hearts and lives of those who held her dear.

She leaves to mourn her passing and to remember her life: her husband, Menno S. Goertzen, rural Newton; a son and daughter-in-law, Franklin and Eleanora, rural Newton; two grandchildren, Vicki Lynn and Patty Jo; her father, David H. Unruh of Durham; four brothers, Frank and Leonard of Tampa, Ed. of Abilene, and Aaron of Alia Vista; two sisters, Mrs. Dan (Pearl) Janzen of Warden, Wash. and Mrs. Ted (Mildred) Everhart, of Hoyt, Kansas, and other relatives and friends.
