Hillsboro Man Fatally Injured Unloading Brick

FUNERAL SERVICES FOR FRANK GOERTZ HELD AT JOHANNESTAL CHURCH

Hillsboro, Kansas. — Frank Goertz, 69, died here Saturday morning, Feb. 13, as result of injuries received from jumping off a truck on Feb. 6 at the new community hospital now under construction.

Mr. Goertz had helped unload a truckload of bricks and was injured when he jumped off the empty truck. He was hospitalized for one week.

Funeral services were held at the Johannestal church.

FRANK H. GOERTZ

Frank H. Goertz, husband and father of the bereaved, was born in Hillsboro. Kansas March 13, 1884, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank F. and Maria (Eckert) Goertz. His childhood and youth were spent on a farm in the Lighthouse school district, where he also received his schooling.

On May 26, 1901, he was baptized upon confession of his faith by Rev. John Plenert in the Johannestal church.

On April 30, 1914, he was united in marriage with Maria Goossen, with whom he lived till her passing July 4, 1949. To this union were born four children: Menno, who preceded his parents in death in 1916; Waldo, who is at present in Japan; Leah, who teaches for the University of Washington at Ft. Steilacoone [sic Steilacoom], Washington; and Adolf, at present in Wichita.

Mother Maria (Goossen) Goertz passed away in July 1949 leaving father very lonely, as all the children had by then left home.

On July 9, 1950, he entered a second marriage with Anna Adrian who was his faithful companion until his passing.

Most of his early life, father lived on a farm, first a little east and then west of Hillsboro. In 1922 he moved to town where he did carpenter work.

In 1939 he and mother transferred their church membership to the First Mennonite church of Hillsboro. They remained in this church fellowship until their passing.

Father’s health was always good except in 1938-39 when he was hospitalized for injuries received due to a fall. February 6, 1954, he entered the Salem hospital with a broken hip sustained in a fall which occurred while he was unloading bricks at the new Salem hospital. At the beginning of the week his condition appeared favorable, but later in the week complications set in and he passed away at 1:30 a.m. Saturday, February 13, 1954.

He leaves to mourn his passing his wife, Mrs. Anna Goertz, his son Waldo, of Tokyo, Japan; a daughter Leah, Ft. Steilacoone [sic Steilacoom], Wash.; and son and daughter-in-law, Adolf and Nora (Brown) Goertz, and their children, Partricia [sic Patricia] Ann and Patrick Allen, of Wichita. Also surviving are his brothers and sisters, Cornelius Goertz of El Cajon, Calif., John Goertz, Mrs. Bena (Goertz) Jost, Mrs. Minnie (Goertz) Ewert, all of Hillsboro, and one half sister, Mrs. Elizabeth (Goertz) Ewert. One brother, Henry, and a sister, Marie, and two half brothers and sisters preceded him in death. Also mourning his passing are many friends and neighbors to whom he has always shown himself as a friend and neighbor in deed.

He attained the age of 69 years and 11 months.
