Henry J. Goering was born to Jacob J. and Anna Schrag Goering near Moundridge, Kan., on Jan. 31, 1890. He died April 13, 1988, at the age of 98 at Moundridge.

He was baptized Jan. 1, 1907, and joined the Hopefield-Eden Mennonite church, where he was a member until his death, except for a period of 21 years when he attended Bethel College Mennonite Church, North Newton. He served the Eden Church as a Sunday school teacher and a deacon and was a charter member of the Eden Men's Chorus.

On Oct. 6, 1911, he married Mary Kauffman of Marion, S. D. They farmed near Moundridge until 1942, when they left the farm due to his health. He worked as a carpenter in Elyria and North Newton. In 1954 he and his wife assisted in house reconstruction in Topeka following a flood; this was the beginning of participation in many service projects.

In 1968 they retired in Moundridge. He moved to Memorial Home for the Aged, Moundridge, after the death of his wife in 1976. Upon entering the home, he continued working with wood in a shop built by his children and the Eden Mennonite Men.

His survivors include six children, Ellis and his wife Esther of Moundridge, Ada and her husband Al Goering of Neodesha, Martha Ford of Uniontown, Oswald and his wife Elaine of North Newton, Ralph and his wife Carmen of Champaign, Ill., and Kathryn and her husband Frank News of Drexel Hill, Pa.; one brother, Jacob J. Goering of Moundridge; 27 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held April 16, 1988, at First Mennonite Church, Moundridge, with Don Longbottom officiating. Interment was in Eden Mennonite Church Cemetery.

HENRY J. GOERING

Henry J. Goering was born to Jacob J. and Anna Schrag Goering near Moundridge, Kan., on Jan. 31, 1890. He died April 13, 1988, at the age of 98 at Moundridge.

He was baptized Jan. 1, 1907, and joined the Hopefield-Eden Mennonite church, where he was a member until his death, except for a period of 21 years when he attended Bethel College Mennonite Church, North Newton.
