Bridgewater, S. D. – Funeral services for Rev. J. J. Glanzer, 76 were held March 5 at the Salem K.M.B. church near here where he had served in the ministry since 1919. He was born in South Russia May 11, 1875, and came to this country at the age of three.

Rev. Glanzer had been a member of the K.M.B. mission board for 11 years, serving as treasurer for part of that time.

REV. JOSEPH J. GLANZER

Our father, Rev. Joseph J. Glanzer, son of Joseph and Barbara (Tschetter) Glanzer, was born May 11, 1875, in Johannesruh, South Russia, and died at his home near Bridgewater, S. D. on March 3, 1952, attaining the age of 76 years, 10 months and 22 days.

At the age of three he came to America with his parents and settled on a farm in Hutchinson county, S. D. where he shared the experiences of pioneer life and received his elementary education.

On March 14, 1901, he was married to Anna Decker by Rev. Ludwig Leibick. They lived with his parents one year and then moved on his own farm where he resided to the time of his death. To this union twelve children were born and one eleven year old girl, Lucy Cranks, was adopted. the Lord blessed the efforts of our parents to the extent that they were able to give their children a fairly good education.

In Nov. 1901 our parents found their salvation in Jesus Christ and upon the confession of their faith were baptized by Rev. Dietrich Goosen, joining the Salem K.M.B. church where they were active in the service of the Lord. In 1912 when the Sunday School was reorganized he served as superintendent. Later he was elected deacon of the church, serving in that capacity two years and as alternate for many years. In 1919 he was elected minister serving the Salem church. He was member of the Foreign Mission Board of the K.M.B. Conference for eleven years serving several years as treasurer. He was always in good health until the beginning of 1951 when internal pains made it necessary for him to seek medical aid. In the middle of July he went to Sioux city for surgery, receiving temporary relief, but soon other complications set in. As time went on his pain increased and he gradually became weaker.

He enjoyed married life for 39 years, 10 months and 22 days, and was a widower 11 years, six months and 16 days.

To mourn his death he leaves three sons, Joseph, John and Elmer of Bridgewater, four daughters, Elizabeth (Mrs. Peter J. Hofer), Bridgewater, Susie (Mrs. Dave G. Wollman), Menno, Rebecca of Bombay, India, and Marie of Bridgewater; one adopted daughter, Lucy Crank (Mrs. Jacob Wahl), Ontario, California; three daughter-in-law and four sons-in-law; thirteen grandchildren; one brother, David of Freeman; three sisters, Sarah (Mrs. Jacob S. G. Hofer), Freeman, Anna (Mrs. D. W. Tschetter), Bridgewater , and Maria J. Tschetter of Dolton.

His beloved wife, five children and one grandchild preceded him in death. Four of the children died in early youth and Barbara (Mrs. Paul D. Hofer) as a mother of five children.

Funeral services were held at the Salem church March 5, 1952, at 2;00 p.m. Bro Jacob H. Glanzer led the congregation in singing an appropriate German hymn, “Freie Gnad.” Invocation by Rev. R. D. Piper of the Trinity Presbyterian church of Bridgewater. English message by Rev. Paul H. Glanzer was based on 2 Cor. 5:1-10, speaking of the confidence of Christ at the hour of death.

Jacob H. Glanzer, Jacob H. Mendel, Ed Tschetter and Mike Glanzer sang, “That Beautiful Land.” Message in German was delivered by Rev. D. W. Tschetter using II Timothy 4:7 as his text. The male quartet sang the German number, “Ich Weis Einen Strom.”

Benediction by Rev. John J. A. Schrag of Marion and interment at the local cemetery with Rev. J. M. Tschetter of Huron officiating.

The memorial fund amounted to $347 and most commendable was his last will and testament wherein Rev. Glanzer designated from his estate the following: One thousand dollars for relief, one thousand dollars for the Evangelical Alliance Mission and one thousand dollars to the Foreign Mission Board of the K.M.B. Conference.
