Widow of Turkey Farms Founder Dies in Iowa

Wellman, Iowa. — Mrs. A. C. Gingerich, 76, whose husband founded the nationally known Maplecrest Turkey Farms, Inc. here, died June 21 at Mercy Hospital, Iowa city.

Mrs. Gingerich, the former Vina Yoder, was a native and lifelong resident of this community. She was active in community groups and the Wellman Mennonite Church, where the funeral was conducted on June 23. Mr. Gingerich died in November 1970.

MRS. VINA J. GINGERICH

Vina J. Gingerich, better known as Mrs. A. C. Gingerich, was born in Johnson County near Wellman, Iowa on Dec. 13, 1894, the youngest daughter of Jacob and Anna (Swartzendruber) Yoder. She passed away on June 21, 1971, at Mercy Hospital, Iowa City, at the age of 76 years and six months.

On June 24, 1917, she was married to Arthur C. Gingerich who preceded her in death on Nov. 28, 1970. They always lived near or in Wellman. She was a member of the Wellman Mennonite Church where memorial services were held June 23, 1971, with Noah Landis and Dean Swartzendruber in charge.

Surviving is one daughter, Evelyn (Mrs. John D. Abromski) of Sarasota, Fla.; one grandson, Douglas Abromski; one granddaughter, Ann Gingerich; two foster sons, Wallace Eash of Prentiss, Miss. and Stanley Eash of Wellman, Iowa. She was preceded in death by her husband, one son, Cecil, and six sisters.

Bequeath $7,500 To Goshen College

Goshen, Ind. — Goshen College has received bequests totalling $7,500 from the estates of an Iowa couple, it was announced recently by J. Lawrence Burkholder, the college president.

The donors are the late Arthur C. and Vina Gingerich, natives and long-time residents of Wellman, Iowa. Mr. Gingerich died in 1970 at the age of 80, and his wife died in June 1971 at the age of 76.

Mr. Gingerich pioneered in southeastern Iowa's turkey industry, founded Maplecrest Farms and developed a unique growing and marketing cooperative known as the Maplecrest Plan. He was active in community affairs and had a special interest in education, serving on the board of curators at the University of Iowa School of Religion, on the local school board, and the board of control of the La Junta Mennonite School of Nursing.

The gift from the estates of the Gingerichs will be used in operations of the Center for Discipleship, Dr. Burkholder said. The Center, founded in 1970, offers continuing education to laymen as well as ministers.
