Coal Mine and Highway Claim Victims in Wayne County

Sonnenberg, Ohio. — An unusual accident at a coal mine near Mt. Eaton on June 3 claimed the life of 22-year-old Joe Gingerich, son of Mr. and Mrs. Menno Gingerich. The young man, an oiler, had his arm caught in some gears while greasing a drag line, causing him to raise up suddenly and strike his head on a bolt, and he died instantly.

Funeral services at the Kidron Mennonite church on June 5 were in charge of Reuben Hofstetter.

A head-on auto accident at the outskirts of Kidron on Tuesday evening, June 1, resulted in the death of one driver, David Welty, 56. The driver of the other car, Albert Barkman, and three passengers were injured but are recovering.

Funeral services for Mr. Welty were held June 4 at the Sonnenberg church, where he had been a member since his youth. He is survived by his wife, the former Susan Gerber, one son and one daughter.
