DANIEL J. GINGERICH

Daniel J. Gingerich, son of Joe C. and Catherine (Swartzendruber) Gingerich, was born near Kalona, Iowa on Jan. 30, 1873, and passed away at his home near Turner, Mich. Dec. 9, 1955, at the age of 82 years, 10 months and nine days.

He grew to manhood in the community in which he was born, accepted Christ as his Saviour and united with the Amish Mennonite church of which he was a faithful member and worker until the Lord called him Home.

He had been failing health the past year with a heart condition and dropsy but had attended services on the Sunday before his sudden passing on Friday evening at about 5:00 o'clock.

He was united in marriage Feb. 11, 1894, to Lydia Kaufman [sic Kauffman], daughter of Elias and Magdalena (Leahman [sic Lehman]) Kaufman [sic Kauffman]. To this union two daughters and six sons were born. One daughter and two sons preceded him in death — Ralph Dec. 31, 1923, Amos Jan. 15,1947, and Magdalena, wife of John Esh [sic Eash], Aug. 27, 1953.

He leaves to mourn his departure his aged wife, with whom he enjoyed more than 61 years of married life; one daughter Catherine at home; a foster daughter, Fannie, Mae Schlabach of Flint, Mich.; four sons, Elias, Joseph, Edward and Daniel; one foster son, Melvin, all of the Turner community. The foster children were children of his brother Ed. Their mother died when they were small and they found a welcome in this home. He also leaves nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Daniel was one of a family of 15 children of whom ten grew to maturity. Remaining are four brothers, Amos of Parnell, Ia., Simon of Wayland, Ia., Joe C. of Dagmar, Mont., Ezra of Quincy, Ill.; one sister, Emma of Kalona, Ia.; and a host of relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held Dec. 13. Short services were conducted at the home by Elmer Jantzi. Noah Swartzendruber and Levi Swartz officiated at the church. Interment was made at Whitney Cemetery. One brother, Amos of Parnell, Ia., his wife and son Truman were present at the services.
