WIFE OF OHIO BISHOP DIES AT AGE 91, AFTER 68TH ANNIVERSARY

Orrville, Ohio. — Funeral services were conducted at the Oak Grove Mennonite Church near Smithville on March 30 for Mrs. Mary Ann Gerig, 91, wife of Bishop J. S. Gerig and a life-long resident of this area. Death came March 27 at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Katherine Hostetler, in Massillon.

Bishop and Mrs. Gerig observed their 68th wedding anniversary on Feb. 5. They were long active in the Oak Grove church, where Bishop Gerig was pastor for many years.

Surviving in addition to her husband and daughter are two sons, Melvin of Smithville and Benjamin of Washington, D. C., seven grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

MRS. MARY ANN GERIG

Mary Ann (Smucker) Gerig, daughter of Gideon and Magdalena Zook Smucker, was born in Green Township, Wayne County, Ohio, on Jan. 19, 1866, and passed away on March 27, 1957, at the age of 91 years, two months and nine days.

On Feb. 5,1889, she was united in marriage to Jacob S. Gerig of Smithville, Ohio. She is survived by her husband, two sons and one daughter: M. R. Gerig, Washington, D. C.; Katherine Hostetler, Massillon, Ohio. Also surviving are a foster daughter, Sadie Smith Conrad and her family. In addition, she leaves seven grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren; one brother, A. L. Smucker, of Smithville, Ohio; and one sister, Mrs. Emma Lantz of Rittman, Ohio.

Early in life she united with the Oak Grove Mennonite Church near Smithville. She served the church faithfully in many capacities. She was a constant guide and companion for her husband in his work as pastor of the church for over sixty years, a companionship which he always deeply appreciated. Her life was a source of inspiration and comfort to many, and though she will be sadly missed, we rejoice in her heavenly reward.

Funeral services were held at the Oak Grove Mennonite Church on March 30, 1957, with V. M. Gerig officiating, assisted by I. W. Royer. Interment was made in the adjoining cemetery.
