Jacob C. Gehring

Jacob C. Gehring was born on the 20th day of October, 1860 in the small village of Horodisch, Wohlinia, Russia. At the age of 13 he immigrated into this country with his parents and many others. The family settled in McPherson County, Kansas, where the deceased lived until death called him from this life into he great beyond. He was the oldest son in the family and thus experienced the hardships and privations of pioneer life.

On the 2nd of April 1876, he was converted and upon the confession of his faith, he was baptized and accepted as a member into the Mennonite Church.

He was united in holy wedlock to Mary Graber, of South Dakota, on the 17th day of January 1884. Together they shared joys and sorrows of life for 43 years and 26 days. Eleven children came into this home, two of whom passed into the better life in early infancy.

About five weeks ago the deceased took sick. Altho he suffered intensely he found much comfort in the Christ who was crucified for our sins. Often he expressed the thought that it is only through the blood and righteousness of Christ that the sinner can stand before God. On Saturday, February 12th, at 2:30 the often expressed desire to go home was fulfilled. He attained the age of 66 years, 3 months and 23 days. Besides the two children, four grandchildren, also preceded him in death.

Funeral services were conducted from the home of the deceased and from the Eden Church, Tuesday afternoon, Feb. 15. In the absence of the pastor, who could not officiate because of sickness, Rev. P. P. Wedel had charge of the services, assisted by Rev. David Zimmerman, of Sterling, Kansas. — Moundridge Journal.
