SARA SCHMIDT GALLE

Sara Schmidt Galle was born on Jan. 3, 1897 to Heinrich and Maria Buller Schmidt at Goessel, Kan. Her mother died when Sara was only six months old.

Her grade school education was received in the rural school at Goessel. She attended the Goessel Preparatory School for two years, graduating in 1916.

She was baptized by Rev. P. H. Unruh and became a member of the Alexanderwohl Church, on June 23, 1918.

She attended the Bethel Academy at North Newton, and graduated in the spring of 1921. She then taught at the Turkey Creek Rural School south of McPherson for one year.

On Sept. 9, 1922, she was married to Oswin K. Galle in the Alexanderwohl Church. Since Mr. Galle was a teacher, a number of moves were necessary in the ensuing years until they settled in Valley Center in 1926.

The work of organizing a Mennonite Church in Wichita began in November 1929. The family became part of this work and became charter members of the Lorraine Avenue Mennonite Church when it was organized in October 1932. She taught Sunday school classes for many ears. She always had a keen interest in the work of her church and helped wherever possible. Her sincere Christian belief and faith in the teachings of Christ made life in the family, the church, and community a real joy and gave lasting satisfaction.

She leaves to mourn her departure from this earth, and rejoicing in her entrance into that eternal life, her husband; seven children, Marianna Hall of Oklahoma City, Okla., Kathryn S. Vogt of Valley Center, Lorraine K. Galle of Topeka, Karmie Galle of Lawrence, Lillian Galle of Chicago, Ill., Darlene Wynn of Wichita, and Omer of Nashville, Tenn.; nine grandchildren, one brother and three sisters. A Sara Galle Memorial Fund has been established at Bethel College, North Newton, Kan.

Memorial services were conducted at the Lorraine Avenue Mennonite Church on March 8, with Rev. Paul L. Goering and Rev. Lamont Woelk officiating.
