HERMAN J. FUNK

Herman J. Funk was born near Hillsboro, Kan. on Jan. 24, 1891, the son of Benjamin and Mary Bartel Funk. He was reared in the French Creek community near Hillsboro.

It was during his youth that he found forgiveness of sins and the assurance of salvation through the words of Hebrews 1:5. "Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee." and was received by baptism into the Hillsboro Mennonite Brethren Church Oct. 8, 1905, by Rev. John A. Harms.

He was married on March 15, 1915 to Sara B. Eitzen at the parental home. Married the same day was his sister, Minnie, who became Mrs. J. A. Franz. For one year they farmed in the French Creek community, then for seven years near Buhler, and last lived on a farm in the Ebenfeld community. In the early 1930s he suffered a severe heart attack from which he recovered. They continued farming until 1953, when they moved to Hillsboro. It was at this point that they rejoined the Hillsboro M. B. Church, where one of his greatest joys was the punctual and faithful attendance at all church activities. Among the many happy experiences during these 15 years of retirement was the celebration of their golden wedding anniversary in 1965.

In October of 1967 he suffered a stroke, was hospitalized for several weeks, but was able to return home. He again was hospitalized on Dec. 21 and quietly passed away early Saturday morning, Dec. 23, 1967 having reached the age of 76 years, 10 months, and 30 days.

Preceding him in death were his parents, twin brothers who died in infancy, and one sister. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Sara Funk, and three daughters and their families: Ruby, Mrs. Robert Grauman and husband, Harvey, N. D.; Luella, Mrs. Ernest Gunther and husband, Dinuba, Calif.; Dorothy, Mrs. Allen Pankratz and husband, Hillsboro, Kan., as well as eight grandchildren; three brothers: Paul, Ben and Harry; and four sisters: Mrs. C. C. Duerksen, Mrs. J. P. Baltzer, Mrs. P. J. Koop, and Mrs. Ruben A. Ratzlaff, all of Hillsboro. — The Family.
