• Mrs. Marie Funk, 73, of Goessel died Monday evening at Bethel Deaconess Hospital. She was a member of the Tabor Mennonite Church where the funeral services will be conducted Thursday morning at 10:30. Rev. James Schrag, the pastor, will officiate. Mrs. Funk was a lifelong resident of this area. Her husband, George R. Funk, died in 1942. She had been a resident of the Bethesda Home since 1973. Survivors include a son, Roland D. of Route 2, Newton; three daughters, Mrs. Rudy Schmidt, Mrs. Orville Voth, and Mrs. LeRoy Goertzen, all of Route 2, Newton; one brother, Albert M. Hiebert of Burns; one sister, Mrs. Pete Androes of Fresno, Calif.; 14 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

MARIE HIEBERT FUNK

Marie Hiebert Funk was born on Sept. 4, 1901, in Harvey County, Kansas to Abraham D. and Sara Unruh Hiebert. She was the youngest of nine children.

She was baptized on April 20, 1919 by Rev. P. H. Richert and received into the Tabor Mennonite Church where she remained a faithful member until her death on Nov. 4, 1974.

On April 12, 1923, she was married to Gerhard R. Funk. Two sons and three daughters were born to this union. Mother and dad were privileged to spend 19 years of married life together before the Lord called her husband and our father home.

Mother was an active woman. She taught Bible school for 29 years in Oklahoma, Arizona, and in Tabor Church. She was active in several sewing societies, in the Bethesda Hospital and Home Auxiliary, in Voluntary Service in Arizona and Fort Wayne, Ind. She loved to entertain, inviting the pastors and deacons yearly to her home. She also invited all of the workers from the hospital and home to her home for a yearly picnic. She served as a telephone operator in Goessel for some time, and was employed at the Herald Book and Printing Company in Newton for 11 years.

She bought a house in Newton and lived there for 12 years, after which she moved back to the farm. Following exploratory surgery in December 1971, her health became steadily worse, although there were times when she felt quite well. In February 1973 she moved to the Bethesda Home. She also took an interest in the Opportunity School in Newton, helping with the rug projects and sharing her love with the children there.

We are grateful that mother's last wishes were fulfilled, namely to attend the centennial celebration, the marriage of her grand-daughter, and on Oct. 27 the Homecoming at the Tabor Church.

She was preceded in death by five sisters — Sara Janzen, Helena, Anna Funk, Bertha and Susie Unruh — and one brother, David. She is survived by one sister, Helen Androes of Fresno, Calif., one brother, Albert, of Burns, seven brothers-in-law and eight sisters-in-law. One son, Ernest, died at birth in 1926.

On Aug. 7, 1970 her son-in-law, Orville Voth, and grandson, Lindel, preceded her in death due to a tragic accident.

Surviving children are three daughters, Luella and husband Rudy Schmidt, Francis [sic Frances], Mrs. Orville Voth, and Phyllis and husband LeRoy Goertzen, and one son, Roland, and wife Vernetta. Ther [sic] are 14 grandchildren and one great-grandson.
