Barbara (Dester) Funk was born August 27, 1864, in Franklin, Lee county, Iowa, the daughter of Henry and Barbara (Ammering) Dester. As a young girl she moved with her parents to Halstead, Kansas.

On January 2, 1898, she was married to David Funk and settled with him on a farm in the “Strip” near Perry, Okla. In 1902 they moved to a farm near Hydro, Okla. Here they lived until 1916, when they moved to Gotebo, Okla. She resided in Gotebo, Okla. until her death.

In April she became stricken with a heart ailment which held her bedfast. She was cared for in her home by her daughters until June 24, when she was taken by ambulane [sic] to Wichita, Kansas to be cared for in the home of her daughter, Martha. There she quietly went to sleep Tuesday, June 28, at 2:45 a. m. she reached the age of 84 years, 10 months and one day.

She was a loyal member of the Mennonite Church and loved to take part in the Sunday school and to sing the hymns of the church.

Her husband preceded her in death December 24, 1934. She leaves to mourn her departure a step-daughter, Lena Ewy, Weatherford, Okla., and six daughters Martha (Mrs. Herman Wiebe) Wichita, Kansas; Lucy (Mrs. John Taves [sic Mrs. Johannes Toews]) Yuciapa, Cal.; Mary (Mrs. Erskine Roberts) Newton, Kansas; Lydia (Mrs. H. A. Pond) Wichita, Kansas; Ruth of Wichita, Kansas; 23 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren.

She was always a devoted mother and a good neighbor. She never spoke an unkind word of anyone; she knew no enemies–she had none. Her child-like faith and trust in god gave to her life a calm serenity, untouched by worldly cares or disturbances. She was truly an example of Christian womanhood.
