JACOB FROESE, SR.
Jacob Froese, Sr., the son of Frank and Cornelia Froese of East Prussia, was born at Hobendorf, Trackt [sic Hohendorf, Am Trakt] in a region of eastern Russia on Jan. 12, 1880, and passed from this life Jan. 9, 1961.
With his parents he migrated to the Turkestan region of central Asia for reasons of religious freedom, and in 1891 came to America. He resided with his parents on a farm near Newton, Kansas until 1894. Shortly after the opening of Oklahoma to the settlement of the Cheyenne-Arapaho Indian Reservation, he moved to Washita County where he became a member of the Herold Mennonite Church. Upon confession of faith he was baptized by Elder Jacob Toews on August 9, 1896.
On August 15, 1901 he was married to Magdalen Janzen of Okarche, Okla. To this union were born nine children, two of whom preceded him in death during infancy. A third son, Bernhard, passed away on Jan. 7, 1955. the six remaining children are Jake Froese of Inola, Okla., Frieda Jantzen of Clinton, Okla., Louis Froese of Inola, and Mrs. Kathryn Page of Muskogee, Okla. Also left to mourn his passing are 17 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
In 1911 he moved to a farm near Vinita, and in 1917 to a farm near Inola. In 1945 he retired from active farming and lived in Inola.
He was an active member of the Eden Mennonite Church for 43 years. he served as secretary of the church board and song leader for many years during this time.
He was a great lover of church music and his favorite songs were: "Jesu, Jesu, born des Lebens, stell ach stell dich bei uns ein," and "When They Ring Them Golden Bells,"
He lived and died with a steadfast hope of seeing Him Whom he had so faithfully served. We sorrow not as others which have no hope. — The Family.
