Immigrant of 1876 Dies at Hillsboro

Hillsboro, Kan. — Funeral services for Mrs. Margaretha Friesen, 86, who came to this country from Russia as a child in 1876, were held at the Mennonite Brethren Church here Sept.13. She died at the Salem Hospital after a long period of failing health.

Mrs. Friesen's family settled in Nebraska, where she was married to Klaas D. Friesen in 1904. He died in 1929, and since 1930 she had lived in Hillsboro.

Surviving are children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and one sister, Mrs. Henry C. Wiens of Hutchinson.

MARGARETHA DAHLKE FRIESEN

Margaretha Dahlke Friesen, daughter of Cornelius and Anna Hiebner Dahlke, was born Nov. 4, 1873, in Russia. In 1877 she came to America with her parents and settled near Henderson, Neb.

In 1893 she accepted the Lord as her personal Savior and upon her confession of faith, was baptized by Elder Isaac Peters and accepted into the E. M. B. Church at Henderson. On Sept. 29, 1946, she transferred her membership to the Mennonite Brethren Church at Tampa, Kan. where she remained a faithful member until her death.

On Aug.16, 1904, she was married to Klaas D. Friesen, to which union were born six children. She also assumed the responsibility of motherhood for one son and two of his daughters by a previous marriage. Father preceded her in death on Jan. 26, 1929. Also preceding her were Margaret, in 1918, her step-son Abe, in 1952, and step son-in-law, John P. Enns in 1925.

Mother was in ill health the last four and one-half years, but suffered severely for two days with a heart attack. She was called to her heavenly home at 7:30 p. m. Sept. 9, 1957.

She leaves to mourn her passing the children, Mary, Mrs. George H. Klassen of Marshall, Ark., Sara, Mrs. Frank Classen of Wichita, Cornelius F. Friesen of Las Vegas, Neveda [sic Nevada], Henry F. Friesen of Midway City, Calif., Elizabeth, Mrs. Abe H. Schnell of Wichita; two step-daughters, Anna, Mrs. John P. Enns of Inman and Agnes, Mrs. Abe E. Kroeker of Buhler; three sons-in-law, two daughters-in-law and one step son-in-law; 22 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren, including the step-grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She also leaves one sister, Mrs. Henry C. Wiens of Hutchinson and a host of other relatives and friends.

Mother will always be remembered by her family for her sincere prayers and her great concern for their spiritual and physical well-being. Even in her greatest sufferings she prayed much and often quoted Psalms 37:5, “Commit thy way unto the Lord; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass.”

Funeral services were held Sept. 13 at 2:00 p. m.. in the M. B. Church at Hillsboro, Kan. “There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God.” Heb. 4:9. — The Family.
