● Funeral services for Cornelius C. Friesen, 79, longtime resident of the Lehigh community, were held Sunday afternoon at the Lehigh Mennonite Church, with Rev. Reuben Krehbiel and Rev. Elbert Koontz officiating. Mr. Friesen died Feb. 2 at the Bethesda Home in Goessel where he had resided the past year and a half. Born in South Russia, he came to this country with his parents in 1892. He farmed northeast of Lehigh until 1947, when he retired and moved to Hillsboro. Mrs. Friesen died in 1959 after 22 years as an invalid due to a stroke of paralysis. Surviving are three daughters and two sons, 11 grandchildren, four sisters and one brother.

CORNELIUS C. FRIESEN

Cornelius C. Friesen was born on Dec. 8, 1886 in Sagradovka, southern Russia, the son of Jacob J. C. and Cornelia (Wall) Friesen. In 1892 the family came to the United States and lived at Mt. Lake, Minn. for six months near relatives who had migrated earlier. They settled on a farm northeast of Lehigh, Kan. where father received his education in the Silverfield school.

He was baptized upon his confession of faith in Christ as his Savior and joined the Lehigh Mennonite Church on Nov. 4, 1906. He remained a member of this church, serving for many years as deacon.

On April 3, 1910 he was married to Marie Krause of Lehigh by her father, Rev. Peter J. Krause. They enjoyed farming northeast of Lehigh until his health caused him to retire and they moved to Hillsboro in 1947.

The family learned much in spiritual values after mother suffered a paralytic stroke in 1937 which left her handicapped until the Lord called her Home on Dec. 4, 1959. Father helped in her nursing care all those years. In 1958, due to their failing health, it became necessary for them o live with some of their children. After mother’s death, father returned to Hillsboro for a time and for the last year and a half he enjoyed being a member of the Bethesda Home family in Goessel, Kan.

With patience and grace, he accepted the heart ailment which he had for many years. This caused his death on Feb. 2, 1966 at the Bethesda Home at the age of 79.

Those who preceded him are his wife, parents, five sisters and one brother. Surviving are his children, Orlando and Ethel Friesen with two daughters and son-in-law, Walter and Wilma Kliewer with two sons, Rosella, Albert and Eva Friesen with one daughter and two sons, and Otto an Marletta Voth with one daughter and three sons.

Sharing this experience with us are his sisters, Mrs. Marie Duerksen of Bethesda Home, Goessel; Mrs. Anna Jantz, Inola, Okla., Mrs. G. E. Epp, Mrs. John Bartel and his brother Abe, all of Hillsboro; six brothers-in-law and five sisters-in-law, and a host of dear nieces, nephews and friends.

Funeral services were held Feb. 6 at 1:30 p.m. at Bethesda Home, Goessel and at 2:30 p.m. at the First Mennonite Church in Lehigh with interment in the church cemetery. Officiating ministers were Rev. Reuben Krehbiel and Rev. Elbert Koontz.
