PETER J. FLAMING

Peter J. Flaming, so of Jacob and Helena (Koehn) Flaming, was born on Oct. 26, 1878 in Marion county, Kansas. He departed this life on Feb. 18, 1960, having reached the age of 81 years, four months and 21 days.

He spent most of his life on the farm in Marion county with the exception of the past year during which he lived in Goessel, Kansas. He also received his education in the Antioch school in Marion county.

On May 29, 1889 he was baptized upon his confession of faith in Jesus Christ as his personal Saviour by Elder Peter Balzer and became a member of the Alexanderwohl Mennonite church, in which he retained his membership all is life.

On April 6, 1902 he was united in marriage with our mother, Justina Goossen, with whom he was privileged to share the joys and sorrows of married life on their farm in Mari9on county for 53years. To this union six children were born, one of whom, Martha, preceded them both in death at an early age. On April 6, 1937 our parents were privileged to celebrate their silver wedding anniversary, and on April 6, 1952 they had the rare privilege of celebrating their golden wedding anniversary.

This happy union was suddenly broken on July 12, 1955 when our dear mother unexpectedly went to be with her Lord. After the passing of our mother, he often said that for him there no longer remained any joys in this life. By this he indicated that he too was ready to depart and be with his Lord.

He was a lover of music and often spent long periods of time with his autoharp, playing his favorite hymns. He was a man of quiet disposition, which was even more evident and pronounced after the passing of our mother. It was also then that his autoharp often gave him special consolation. It was his implicit faith in God which was his strength and stay in difficult days and in which he rejoiced at all times.

He enjoyed good health most of his life. However because of failing eyesight he submitted to eye surgery on Feb. 13, 1959 and again on Jan. 15 of this year. He was slowly recovering from this recent surgery when on Feb. 18 other complications weakened his condition, and he was taken to the Goessel hospital. At 1:30 p.m. of the same day he suffered a heart attack and quietly passed to his eternal home.

He leaves to mourn his departure his children, Mr. and Mrs. John G. Flaming of Newton, Kan., Maria, Mrs. Arnold T. Schmidt wand husband of Newton, Mr. and Mrs. George G. Flaming of Hillsboro, Kan., Mr. and Mrs. Jacob G. Flaming of Hillsboro, and Sarah, Mrs. Otto Quiring and husband of Newton; 22 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren; three sisters; Mrs. F. W. Banman of Newton, Mrs. Katie Gaeddert of Hutchinson, and Mrs. David Ediger of Hillsboro; and one brother, John of Goessel.

He was preceded in death by our mother, one daughter, two sisters, and one grandchild. — The Family.
