— John J. Flaming, 78, died Jan. 20 at the Bethesda Hospital in Goessel. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the Alexanderwohl Church, with Rev. Aaron Epp and Rev. P. A. Wedel officiating. Except for six years residence in Idaho, Mr. Flaming spent his entire life in the Goessel community. Surviving are his wife, Anna, three sons, four daughters, three sisters, 32 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Adolf Franz, a duaghter [sic], and Mrs. F. W. Banman, a sister, reside in Newton.

JOHN J. FLAMING

John J. Flaming, Goessel, Kan., son of John P. and Lena (Koehn) Flaming, was born Dec. 12, 1883, in Goessel, Kan. Here He spent his childhood years and received his elementary education. On May 22, 1904, he was baptized by Elder Peter Balzer, upon his confession of faith in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, and received as a member of the Alexanderwohl Mennonite Church, where he remained a member until his death.

On Jan. 22, 1905, he was joined in holy matrimony to Anna Brandt, Rev. C. C. Wedel officiating. They lived their 57 years of married life in the Goessel area except for six years, which were spent in DuBois, Idaho where they anticipated the establishment of a new farming area. When the irrigation system failed to be developed, they came back to Kansas and continued making their livlihood [sic] through farming.

They moved to town in 1951, but father continued to be active in farming operations. He will be remembered for his real concern for the spiritual life of the family.

His activity was impaired when he suffered a stroke on Nov. 20, 1958. This stroke left him speechless and unable to care for himself. Mother has faithfully cared for him in the home. In 1955 it was their privilege to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary.

He was hospitalized at the Bethesda Hospital from where he went to his eternal reward on Jan. 20, at the age of 78 years. Two sons, one daughter and two grandchildren preceded him in death.

Those remaining to cherish his life are his wife, Anna; seven children: Katie and her husband Rudolf Hiebert, Lehigh; John B. and his wife Verna, Hillsboro; Anna and her husband Menno Heibert, Route 2, Hillsboro; Helen, and her husband Adolf Franz, Newton; Jacob B. and his wife Sylvia, Hutchinson; Ted and his wife Frieda, Route 2, Hillsboro; Susie and her husband Eldon Goertzen, Walton; one daughter-in-law, Elda, Mrs. Herbert Franz, Goessel; 22 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Mary, Mrs. Frank W. Banman, Newton; Mrs. Katie Gaeddert, Buhler, and Mrs. David Ediger, Goessel, and many other relatives and friends. — The Family.
