JACOB J. EWY
Jacob J. Ewy was one of 10 children born to Jacob and Barbara (Ewy) Ewy near Gurnarno, Austria on Oct. 18, 1869.
During his boyhood, upon his confession of faith in the Lord Jesus as his personal Saviour from sin, he was baptized and accepted into the Mennoite [sic] Church in Austria. On April 8, 1898, he transferred his membership to the First Mennonite Church of Christian, Moundridge, Kan. where he retained his membership until his death.
In 1883 at the age of 14 years Mr. Ewy came with his parents, brothers and sisters to America. For many years the parental home was located near Turkey Creek on the Buhler road in Reno County, Kan.
April 17, 1898, Mr. Ewy was united in marriage to Miss Minnie Hubin. To this union were born eight children, six sons and two daughters. The family home was in Garden township. When the children were grown, Mr. and Mrs. Ewy moved to Moundridge to spend their declining years. On Nov. 26, 1940, Mrs. Ewy passed to her reward. Sept. 12, 1941 — less than a year later — Mr. Ewy suffered a second loss in the death of his son, Carl. An infant son, two brothers, John and Rudolph, five sisters, Mrs. Barbara Miller, Mrs. Katie Neufeld, Mrs. Lizzie Swisctowicz [sic Swistowicz], Mrs. Susie Merk and Mrs. Emelia Sperling, also preceded him in death.
Surviving him are six children, August and wife Berniece of Moundridge, Clara and husband Adolph Bachman of Halstead, Herman and wife Alieda of Wichita, Esther and husband Martin M. Hostetler of Newton, Waldo and wife Sarah of Newton, Albert and wife Marie of Hesston, Vera Mae (Ewy) Williams of Newton, two sisters, Mrs. Mathilda Ewy, Moundridge, and Mrs. Fred (Minnie) Rutschman, of Newton; 20 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren, and many other relatives and friends.
Grandpa Ewy, though small of stature, possessed a strong physique and was blessed with good health all of his life. He was a hard worker. At the age of 14 he worked for others to help his parents and himself enjoy freedom in the United States. This industrious nature was taught to his children along with the traditional methods of thrift characteristic of the Mennonite homes of Europe. He was always interested in the well-being of his family.
While living in Garden Twp. he served many years on the school board and taught the German S. S. Class of the Garden Mennonite Church. In later years he strove to keep reading his Bible in spite of only partial vision. On several occasions he indicated his readiness to be with the Lord.
For the last seven years Father Ewy made his home with his son August and wife Berniece, who lovingly cared for him. He enjoyed visits from his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He spent six weeks at the Bethesda Home in Goessel prior to his illness. March 28 he slipped and fell, breaking his hip. April 2 he underwent surgery. He spent over nine weeks in the Bethel Deaconess Hospital, Newton. Although doctors and nurses ministered to him faithfully, he quietly fell asleep Sunday, June 2, 1957, at 6:30 a. m., having attained the age of 87 years, seven months and 15 days.
Rev. E. J. Miller, Rev. P. P. Wedel and Rev. Harris Waltner had charge of the memorial services, held at the Harder Chapel and the First Mennonite Church of Christian, Moundridge, on June 4. Interment was made in the Christian cemetery, Moundridge. — The Family.
