— Emma A. Ewy, 61, of Halstead died Tuesday afternoon at the Bethel Deaconess Hospital after a long illness. Funeral services are to be held Friday at 10 a.m. at the First Mennonite church of Halstead, where she was a member. The services are to be in charge of Dr. D. C. Wedel and Rev. John F. Schmidt, both of North Newton, and burial is to take place in the Arlington cemetery, where the deceased lived in former years. Two sisters, Mrs. Walter Berger, Arlington, and Mrs. Edgar Hege, oxford, survive.

MISS EMMA A. EWY

Miss Emma A. Ewy, long time resident of Halstead, Kan., passed away in the Bethel Hospital in Newton on Tuesday evening, August 13, 1957, after being hospitalized for five days. Her last illness extended over a period of about three years. She was born at Hanston, Kansas on June 22, 1896, daughter of the late Amalia and Edward Ewy.

Leaving Hanston, the Ewy family moved to Arlington, Kansas where they made their home for many years. Miss Ewy came to Halstead to make her home in 1925, residing there since that time. She had been a member of the Mennonite Church since early in life and was identified with the church's activities to the very end. Her Christian experience was rich and meaningful to her.

In 1923 she graduated from the Halstead School of Nursing and followed this profession until her illness made it necessary to retire. Genuine, kindly, soft spoken and friendly, she exemplified the finest in the nursing traditions. She was not only loved by her patients but was trusted and respected by her associates and by the doctors. She had a sincerity of purpose which made her truly a good nurse.

She is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Walter Berger of Arlington, Kansas and Mr. Edgar Hege of Oxford, Kansas, two nephews, Keith and Norman Hege, and many other relatives.

Funeral services were held in the First Mennonite Church of Halstead on Friday morning, August 16, at 10:00 o'clock. Because of the absence of her pastor, Dr. D. C. Wedel and Rev. John F. Schmidt conducted the memorial service. Margaret Gaeddert, Ruth Ewy and Patricia DuBois sang: “Abide With Me” and “Be Still My Soul.” A cousin, Lester Ewy, sang “The Lord's Prayer.” Mrs. Milton Ewy and Mrs. Harvey Vogt were the organist and the pianist. She was laid to rest in the family lot in the Arlington Cemetery with the directors of the Kaufman Funeral Home in charge of fungal arrangements.
