MRS. AMELIA EWY
Mrs. Amelia Ewy passed away, peacefully in her sleep, early Monday morning, September 18, 1950, at her home in Halstead. Death came after only one day's illness.
She was born in Austria on January 25, 1871, and was the daughter of Daniel and Barbara Brubaker Mueller. She reached the age of 79 years, seven months and 23 days. She was married to Edward Ewy in September of 1895 in Hanston, Kansas who preceded her in death on July 17, 1925. For many years they had made their home in Arlington, Kansas but after the death of her beloved husband in the fall of that year she came to Halstead where she had her home up to the time of her death.
Born to Mr. and Mrs. Ewy were three daughters, who survive her. These are Mrs. E. J. (Tillie) Hege of Oxford, Kansas. Mrs. Martha Berger of Arlington, Kansas and Miss Emma Ewy of Halstead. Surviving her also are two grandsons, Keith and Norman Hege, son-in-law, Edgar Hege of Oxford, [sic lines reversed in original] and one brother, Edward W. Miller of Little River, Kansas. Many other relatives also mourn her sudden death.
She was united with the Arlington Mennonite church as a charter member in 1905, where she retained her membership throughout these years.
Mrs. Ewy knew all the hardships of the early pioneer days. Coming to Kansas in 1883, she soon became acquainted with the hard life of the early settlers, where neighbors helped each other and community life was closely knit together. She was loved by all who knew her and her circle of friends was large. Her ideals were high and she lived her religious beliefs in an everyday, practical way: truly a Christian, following in His steps.
Funeral services were conducted from the Kaufman Funeral chapel in Halstead on Wednesday morning at 10:00 o’clock with Rev. D. C. Wedel of Newton as the officiating minister. Mrs. Richard Regier was the soloist, singing "Beyond The Sunset” and “Sunrise.” Mrs. Harvey Vogt was the accompanist. Additional services were conducted in the Arlington Mennonite church, where she was a member, with the pastor, Rev. John F. Schmidt in charge. A mixed quartet composed of Mrs. Lydia Linscheid, Mrs. Eva Spessard, P. R. Linscheid and Eddie Ewy sang "Near To The Heart of God” and “Take Thou My Hand.” Mrs. Howard Hynes was the accompanist.
Casket bearers were: John Hopper, Al Schmidt, Jasper Dunn, Lester Ewy and Howard Hynes, all of Arlington, and Milton Berger of Halstead. She was laid to rest in the family lot in the Arlington cemetery.
