Hillsboro, Kan. &#8212; Funeral services for John A. Ewert, 91, retired lay minister and farmer, were held at the Trinity Mennonite Church on April 21. Rev. Victor Sawatzky, the pastor, officiated.

Mr. Ewert died Sunday, April 18, at Salem Hospital here.

A native of this area, Mr. Ewert accompanied his parental family to homestead near Cordell, Okla. in 1895. He returned here in 1902 to attend the Hillsboro Bible Academy. He graduated from Bethel College, and taught in rural schools of the community as well as at the Hillsboro Academy. In 1911 he was elected to the ministry in the Johannestal Mennonite Church, and served as assistant minister for 25 years.

Survivors include his widow, Bertha; two daughters, Mrs. Ernst Harder of Montevideo, Uruguay and Mrs. Arnold Nickel of Moundridge; and one brother, David C. Ewert.

John A. Ewert, 91, retired lay minister and farmer of Hillsboro, Kan., died early Sunday morning, April 18, at Salem Hospital, Hillsboro.

Born Dec. 13, 1879 on a farm near Hillsboro, he was the son of Andreas and Anna (Bartel) Ewert. In 1895 he went with his family to homestead near Cordell, Okla., returning in 1902 to attend Hillsboro Bible Academy. Following his graduation in 1904 he taught rural school and German Bible School. He also attended Bethel College, graduating in 1909, and returned to teaching public schools including Unruh, Silberfeld, Brudertal, French Creek and the Hillsboro Academy.

In 1911 Mr. Ewert was elected to the ministry of the Johannestal Mennonite Church and served it as assistant minister for 25 years. He had previously been received into church membership in 1896 in Oklahoma. For more than 50 years he taught Sunday school classes and served in other areas of church work.

For 35 years he lived on the same farm to which he brought his bride, Bertha Wiebe, also a schoolteacher, on June 10, 1915. In 1950, at the age of 71 he retired from the farm and he and Mrs. Ewert moved to their present home in Hillsboro.

Surviving are his wife, Bertha; two daughters, Mrs. Ernst Harder, Montevideo, Uruguay, and Mrs. Arnold Nickel of Moundridge, and eight grandchildren. Two grandchildren, Ronald and Karl Harder, preceded him in death. One brother, David C. Ewert, also survives.

The funeral was held Wednesday afternoon, April 21, in the Trinity Mennonite Church of Hillsboro, with Victor Sawatzky officiating. Interment was in the Johannestal Mennonite Cemetery.

Retired Lay Minister, Farmer Dies at Age 91

Hillsboro, Kan. — Funeral services for John A. Ewert, 91, retired lay minister and farmer, were held at the Trinity Mennonite Church on April 21. Rev. Victor Sawatzky, the pastor, officiated.

John A. Ewert, 91, retired lay minister and farmer of Hillsboro, Kan., died early Sunday morning, April 18, at Salem Hospital, Hillsboro.
