JOHANN P. EWERT

Johann P. Ewert, son of H. D. and Helena Penner Ewert, was born north of Hillsboro, Kansas July 26, 1897. He received his elementary education at the Brudertal school and for two years attended the Hillsboro Preparatory school.

He was baptized upon confession of faith June 10, 1916 by Rev. Wm. J. Ewert and became a member of the Bruderthal [sic Brudertal] Mennonite church.

He was united in marriage to Helen Goossen on May 20, 1927. In 1941 they transferred their membership to the First Mennonite Church at Hillsboro. He loved his church and remained a faithful member, attending church services whenever possible. Two daughters were born to this union. His companion preceded him in death Nov. 14, 1948.

On August 16, 1949, he was united in marriage with Marie Penner. We shared life's joys and sorrows for almost 10 years. He was engaged in farming and enjoyed the out-of-doors. He enjoyed good health until about a year and a half ago.

He was a kind, loving and appreciative husband, father and grandfather. He prayed often for his family and for strength to endure his affliction, especially during the last months of his life. He was relieved of all his suffering Monday morning, May 18, 1959, at 3 a.m. in the Bethel Deaconess Hospital, Newton.

He leaves to mourn his departure his loving wife Marie; two daughters, Wanita and husband Vernon Goentzel, and Annettie [sic Annette] and husband Raymond Stockpots; three grandchildren; four sisters, Maria and G. E. Wiens of Durham, Mrs. Emma Repel of Peabody, Helena and Philemon P. Sprunger of Chicago, Ill., Agnes and Theo. Goertz of Edwardsville, Ill.; and three brothers, Pete and wife Emma of Hillsboro, Ben and wife Emma of Marion, Albert and wife Tyllie [Mathilda] of Oklahoma city.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Herman. Also surviving him, are brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. May 20 at the First Mennonite church of Hillsboro by Rev. Elbert Koontz, with Rev. H. T. Unruh assisting. Burial was made in the Hillsboro cemetery.
