HENRY C. EWERT

Henry C. Ewert, son of Cornelius and Marie (Schmidt) Ewert, was born June 16, 1879 at Avon, S. D. He died at the St. Michael's Hospital in Tyndall, S. D. on Feb. 25, 1971 at the age of 91 years, eight months and nine days. Death came after more than five weeks of serious illness.

He was baptized by Christian Kaufman on June 26, 1896 at the age of 17 and joined the Friedensberg Mennonite Church where he remained a loyal and faithful member throughout his life.

On Feb. 15, 1906 he was married to Emma Dirks by Christian Kaufman. This union lasted for 65 years and 10 days. To this union were born three children: Pauline, John, and Frank. Pauline preceded him in death at the age of four. He was also preceded in death by two brothers and one sister.

He leaves to mourn his wife, Emma; two sons, John of Aberdeen, S. D. and Frank of Monroe, Wash.; two daughters-in-law: Rose and Lilly; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

His main interests lay in the work of the church and the community and his occupation of farming. He was a faithful worker in the church throughout his life. He had a special interest in missions and gave liberally of his means for its support. For many years he served as song leader, Sunday school superintendent, and chairman of the church board.

After attending Bethel College and the Normal School at Fremont, Neb., he taught rural school for several years. He was also a member of the Freeman Junior College board for many years.

His community activities consisted of serving as secretary of the German Telephone Company, secretary of the Mennonite Aid Plan, and clerk of the Mennonite school district.

Memorial services were held March 1, 1971 at the Friedensberg Mennonite Church with Rev. Peter Quiring as minister. Music was furnished by Rachel van Dusen and a quartet composed of Henry Becker, Harold Hornsta, Albert Ratzlaff, and Ben Becker. Interment was at the Friedensberg Mennonite Cemetery. — The Family.
