Wife of Well Known Minister Taken in Death

MRS. B. EWERT AMONG FIRST THREE IMMIGRANTS BURIED IN URUGUAY

Hardly had the 760 Mennonite immigrants from Danzig arrived at their assigned camps in Uruguay when death called the first three persons out of their midst, said H. J. Andres, administrator of the Bethel Deaconess Hospital, in his report at the First Mennonite Church last Sunday evening.

Mr. Andres represented the MCC in helping settle the refugees when they arrived in Uruguay last October 27. His message was illustrated with excellent color slides which he took of the immigrants as they arrived and as they later became established at their temporary camps.

Among the first three who died in Uruguay was Mrs. Bruno Ewert, 58, wife of the well known Elder Bruno Ewert of Danzig. The other two were aged grandmothers. Mrs. Ewert, suffering from cancer, was removed from the ship by ambulance to a hospital in Montevideo but later accompanied the group to the camp at Arapey. She died Dec. 10 and was buried Dec. 11.

Young men in the camp made a beautiful coffin and the funeral lacked nothing in dignity and solemnity. Rev. Ewert, who tenderly cared for his wife on the long journey, will continue to serve as one of the spiritual leaders among these first Mennonite pioneers in Uruguay.
