Canada Church Leader Called Away in Death

REV. BENJ. EWERT CAME TO MANITOBA FROM KANSAS IN 1892

Winnipeg, Man. — Funeral services were held at the Bethel Mennonite church here June 25 for Rev. Benj. Ewert, who died June 22 at Misericordia Hospital.

Coming to Manitoba from Hillsboro, Kan. in 1892, Rev. Ewert had a prominent part in the development of Mennonite church life in the Prairie Provinces of Canada for over a half-century. He reached the age of 87 years, but had been in failing health for many months.

Born in West Prussia Nov. 26, 1870, Rev. Ewert came to Kansas with his parents early in his youth and attended the Halstead Seminary from 1884 - 90. In 1892 he accepted a teaching position in Edenburg School, Gretna, Man., and in 1895 became pastor of the Bergthal church which he served until 1921. As long as he was able, his later years were devoted to the itinerant ministry, during which he served in Mennonite churches all over Canada.

Surviving are two sons, Harold of Winnipeg and Wesley of Vancouver, B. C., and two daughters, Mrs. Peter Drummond and Amanda, also of Vancouver. Mrs. Ewert, the former Emilie A. Ruth of Halstead, Kan., died in 1949.
