JOHN EVERS
John Vernon Evers, firstborn child of Alvin and Eva (Hershey) Evers, was born on his mother's birthday, July 9, 1916, near Cheraw, Colo. The greater part of his life was spent in the Cheraw community where he attended school.
On Dec. 20, 1936,he was married to Velma Kiser at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Kiser. They lived most of their married life on a farm east of Cheraw.
As a teenager he accepted Christ and became a member of the East Holbrook Mennonite Church, which he supported faithfully throughout his life.
John enjoyed people whether they were friends or almost total strangers. He was an elder of the church for many years, president of the Holbrook Mutual Irrigation Assn., served on the Cheraw School Board, and was a past president of the Colorado Turkey Federation.
While sitting in his chair reading on Saturday evening, March 16, 1974, he seemed to fall asleep and God must have said, "It is finished . . . come with Me into glory!" He reached the age of 57.
He leaves his wife, Velma; three daughters, Mrs. Ellsworth (Evelyn) Risser of Elkhart, Ind., Mrs. Wallace (Imogene) Plank of Cheraw, and Beverly, presently a student at Goshen College; four grandchildren; his father-in-law, John Kiser, of Hesston, Kan.] three sisters, Mrs. Harry (Letha) Froese and Mrs. H. O. (Esther) Baker of Cheraw, and Mrs. Daniel (Alice) Kauffman of Filer, Idaho; and one brother, Floyd, of Cheraw. Preceding him in death were his mother in 1968 and his father just four weeks ago.
