Lancaster County Children Killed

Atglen, Pa. — Accidents claimed the lives of two Lancaster County children within recent weeks.

Ray Nelson Meck, seven-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Jay Nelson Meck of rural Kinzers, was instantly killed the afternoon of Oct. 4 when he stepped off the school bus near his home and was hit by a car.

The car driver was a vacationing New York City policeman who said he did not know that blinking lights on a school bus meant "no passing."

Funeral services for the youth were held Oct. 8 at the Kinzers Mennonite church.

A farm accident on Oct. 14 claimed the life of a three-year-old Amish girl, Susan M. Esch, daughter of the Daniel M. Esches of rural Gap. She and her five-year-old brother were playing near a silo when she was run over by the steel wheel of a wagon pulled by two mules.
