The young man, vacationing with members of his family in their cottage near South Haven, Mich., was in swimming with a cousin, Marcy Esch, when undertow swept them away from the beach. Marcy, a good swimmer, tried to help him back to shore, but was unable to do so. She made her way to safety.

Arthur, one of the top 10 members of the 1968 graduating class at Washington Community High school, had enrolled as a freshman at the University of Illinois. He was the only child of Mr. and Mrs. Claude M. Esch.

18-Year-Old Illinois Youth Drowns in Lake Michigan

Washington, Ill. — Funeral services for Arthur Esch, 18, who drowned on labor Day in Lake Michigan, were conducted Sept. 5 at the Calvary Mennonite Church here. Rev. Ward Shelly, the pastor, officiated.

The young man, vacationing with members of his family in their cottage near South Haven, Mich., was in swimming with a cousin, Marcy Esch, when undertow swept them away from the beach. Marcy, a good swimmer, tried to help him back to shore, but was unable to do so. She made her way to safety.
