Rural Newton Girl Fatally Injured When Car Hits Bridge

The Elbert Esau family of Route 3, Newton, was involved in a one car accident north of Potwin on Monday evening, resulting in the death of a 15-year-old daughter Clarith A. Esau.

Mr. and Mrs. Esau and children David, Eldon, Nathan and Dorene were admitted to Bethel deaconess Hospital, along with another passenger, David Wiebe of Whitewater. All except David Esau remained in the hospital as of Wednesday morning.

Mr. Esau reported that his car struck a bridge when he swerved to avoid another car coming from the opposite direction.

Funeral arrangements for Clarith were incomplete at the Review's press time.

• Funeral services were conducted at the Emmaus Mennonite Church near Whitewater on Friday forenoon for Clarith A. Esau, L. R. Amstutz officiated at the services. Clarith, who had completed her freshman year at Frederic Remington High School, was born in Greece while her parents were in MCC service there. The Esaus were returning home from a 4-H picnic at El Dorado when their car was forced off the road by an oncoming car north of Potwin and struck a bridge. Other members of the family were hospitalized with injuries, but all have been released except Mrs. Esau. She remains a patient at Bethel Hospital here with a fractured leg, a chipped bone in the other leg, and other injuries. David Wiebe, 15, son of Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Wiebe, was a passenger in the car and remains a patient here with a fractured leg. Mrs. Esau was taken by ambulance to Whitewater to attend the funeral of her daughter. Survivors in addition to the parents include three brothers and one sister, all of the home, and grandmother, Mrs. Edward Esau of rural Whitewater.
