Indiana Minister Dies In Auto Accident

REV. MENNO ERB FATALLY INJURED IN CRASH NEAR FORT WAYNE

Goshen, Ind. — One of the largest funerals to be held in these parts in recent months took place Saturday, Oct. 22, at the Yellow Creek Mennonite Church, the services being for Rev. Menno C. Erb.

Rev. Erb, 44, a part time pastor at Benton and also substitute pastor at the Ft. Wayne Mennonite Church, was fatally injured in a four-car accident Wednesday, Oct. 19, just west of Ft. Wayne. Suffering a crushed chest and severe head injuries, he died about an hour and a half after the crash.

With him in the car was Mrs. Erb, who also was thrown from the car and critically injured. She is now a patient in the Goshen General Hospital. Rev. Erb's 1954 Buick was demolished as it crashed into the rear of a pickup truck on a wet highway.

Conducting the funeral services were Rev. Irvin Nusbaum and Rev. John O. Zehr. Burial was in Yellow Creek cemetery.

Rev. Erb was born May 5, 1916 [sic May 11, 1916] in O'Neill, Nebr. He was married May 21, 1937, to Lois Eichelberger in Beemer, Nebr. Surviving besides his wife are three sons and three daughters.

MENNO C. ERB

Menno C. Erb was born in O'Neal, Neb., on May 11, 1916, the third son of Chris and Barbara Erb. As a young lad of 13 he accepted Christ as his Savior. He was married to Lois Eichelberger on May 21, 1937 at Beemer, Neb. To this union were born six children, Larry of Rt. 4, Goshen, Ind., and Karen, Lonnie, Phyllis, Ralph and Eunice of the home in Benton, Ind. Also surviving is his father of West Point, Neb., two brothers, Leonard of West Point, Neb., and Wilford of Beemer, Neb., and many other relatives and friends. His mother passed away Dec. 2, 1955.

The Erb family lived in and around Beemer until 1948 when they moved to Detroit Lakes, Minn. He was ordained as pastor of the Lake Regin [sic Region] Mennonite church in August 1955. He served there until May 1957, when the family moved to a farm near Goshen, Ind. In September of the same year they moved to Benton, Ind. where he served as pastor of the Mennonite church for one year. At the time of his death he was serving as temporary pastor of the Anderson Mennonite church and employed in Wakarusa, Ind.

He went to be with his Savior Oct. 19, at 8:15 a.m. after suffering internal injuries in an automobile accident near Fort Wayne, Ind. He reached the age of 44 years, five months, and eight days.

Funeral services were held Oct. 22 at the Yellow Creek Mennonite church, in charge of Irvin Nussbaum and John David Zehr. Interment was in the Benton cemetery.
