Beatrice, Neb. Pioneer Called At Age 91

Beatrice, Neb. — Henry P. Epp, who was among the pioneer Mennonite settlers in this east central Nebraska community, died at a local hospital on July 25 at the age of 91.

Born in West Prussia on March 19, 1871, he came to Beatrice in 1882 and had lived here ever since. He was the oldest member of the Beatrice Mennonite Church, where the funeral services were conducted on July 28 by Rev. Norman D. Bergen.

Surviving are his widow, Anna W.; five sons, Walter F. and Fred of Beatrice, Herman J. F. of Valentine, Neb., and Abram and Henry of Lincoln, Neb.; one daughter, Mrs. Louise Peterson of Lexington, Neb.; one brother, Cornelius Epp of Beatrice; 11 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

HENRY P. EPP

Henry P. Epp was born in Warnau, West Prussia, Germany, on March 19, 1871. His parents were Abraham and Marie (nee Penner) Epp. His mother passed away two years prior to his coming to America with his father, brothers and sisters. He received his education in the parochial school in Germany and later in the public school near Hoag, Neb.

He was baptized by Elder Gerhard Penner and became a member of the Mennonite Church west of Beatrice, Neb. in 1889. In 1926 he transferred to his membership to the Beatrice Mennonite Church.

He was united in marriage with Anna Wiebe on Sept. 19, 1901, near DeWitt, Neb. This union was blessed with six sons and one daughter. The deceased was preceded in death by one son, Louie, who died in 1921. Mr. and Mrs. Epp were permitted to live together in happy marriage over 60 years.

Mr. Epp was a farmer in the Beatrice vicinity until his retirement in 1935 when he and Mrs. Epp moved to Beatrice. He enjoyed exceptionally good health until approximately a year ago. He was a faithful member of his church throughout this life. Always a loving father and husband, his family was his first concern.

He passed away at the Mennonite Hospital, Beatrice, Neb., on July 25, 1962 at the age of 91. He is survived by his sons, Walter and Fred of Beatrice, Herman of Valentine, Abram and Henry of Lincoln; his daughter, Louise (Mrs. William Peterson) of Lexington, Neb., 11 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, one brother, Cornelius of Beatrice; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held July 28 at the Beatrice Mennonite Church with Rev. Norman D. Bergen officiating. Interment was in the Mennonite cemetery. Memorial gifts were designated for the spiritual ministry of the Mennonite Deaconess Hospital in Beatrice.
