text of obituary:

HEINRICH D. EPP

Heinrich D. Epp, the second child of Heinrich H. and Helena Peters Epp, was born on Oct. 12, 1882, on a farm near Henderson, Neb. He spent most of his life in the Henderson community. He died on Feb. 23, 1970, reaching the age of 87 years, four months, and 11 days.

On June 1, 1903, following catechetical instruction, Heinrich was baptized by Elder P. J. Friesen and accepted as a member of the Bethesda Mennonite Church.

Heinrich's elementary education was rather limited. Because his father needed his help with fall and spring farm work, he could attend school only from November until the middle of March each year. In his late teens he was privileged to attend the Bethel College Academy for one year. For seven years after his 21st birthday he alternated school attendance at Bethel and the University of Nebraska with teaching in his home community.

In 1910, Heinrich was married to Elisabeth Richert and to this union were born three children. In the years that followed, he taught parochial school, served as an assistant minister in the Bethesda Church, and earned his livelihood by farming.

In 1924 the family moved to Lincoln, Neb. where Heinrich completed requirements at the University for his B. A. and M. A. degrees. Then the family moved back to Henderson where he held positions of high school instructor, high school principal, and superintendent of the school. In 1936 he retired from teaching and once again returned to farming.

Through the years he has served his community and his church in many positions. In addition to serving on various committees and boards in the community and county he also was a member of the General Conference Committee on Education, chairman of the Northern District Conference, and a member of the Advisory Board of Bethel College.

During his later years he spent many hours organizing and cataloging books for the Bethesda Church Library. In spite of increasing hearing difficulties, Heinrich's interest in his family, his church, and his community remained lively to the end of his days. Since July, he had resided in the Henderson Nursing Home. His reciting of Scripture, poems, and verses on frequent occasions was a source of cheer to other residents of the Home.

Surviving are one daughter, Dorothea Helena, and her husband L. Paul Heath of Topeka, Kan.; two sons, Carl H. and wife Margaret Ruth and Robert O. and wife Amelia Amanda, all of Henderson; eight grandchildren; two sisters, Marie (Mrs. John K. Friesen) and Elisabeth Epp, both of Henderson. Preceding him in death were his beloved wife, three sisters and five brothers.

Funeral services were conducted at the Bethesda Mennonite Church at Henderson on Feb. 26, 1970. Rev. Walter Dyck and Rev. Abe Krause officiated.
