W. Howard Epp was born Feb. 3, 1910, at Lushton, Neb., the second of six children born to Dietrich and Barbara Epp. His mother died when he was a teenager.
He was always interested in mechanical things and began repairing things at an early age. He graduated from high school in 1928 and from Coyne Electric in Chicago in 1934 He operated a repair shop in Lushton for a time and moved to California in August 1939.
He was baptized upon confession of faith in 1938 at Bethesda Mennonite Church, Henderson, Neb.
He was married to Verna Janzen on May 31, 1940, at the Henderson Church. For 13 years they lived in Reedley, Calif., and attended First Mennonite Church. When they moved to Fresno, they helped start Mennonite Community Church.
He and his brother operated the first hardware store in Fresno's Mayfair Shopping Center, where he worked until his retirement in 1975. He and his wife then volunteered many hours to the MCC Et Cetera Shop and enjoyed traveling and camping with their recreational vehicle.
He suffered several heart attacks in 1986.
He is survived by his wife, Verna; two daughters and their husbands, Connie and Larry Franz of Denver, Colo., and Becky and Don Linscheid of Fresno; one son and his wife, Gary and Charlene of Kansas City; three grandchildren; two sisters, Elsie Kornelsen of Springfield, Mo., and Ruth Wiens of Leamington, Ont.; two brothers, Eric of Toronto and Ivan of Michigan; and a stepmother, Agnes Peters of Florida.
