Long-Time Newton Businessman Dies

Henry Enz, 83, who had been in business in Newton for 66 years, died Monday at Bethel Deaconess Hospital after being ill for some time.

A native of this community, he began work as a buggy trimmer in 1905, then changed to auto trimming, and eventually to a maker of canvas products. He was associated with his son, Arthur, in the Henry Enz and Son firm on East Sixth Street.

Surviving in addition to the son here are a daughter, Mrs. John (Gertrude) Harms of Augusta; another son, Rev. Jacob J. Enz of Elkhart, Ind.; two brothers, Paul of Newton and Otto of Berkeley, Calif.; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Enz, the former Lydia Toews, died on May 14 of this year. Recently Mr. Enz had resided at the Kansas Christian Home. He was a member of the First Mennonite Church, where the funeral will be conducted Thursday afternoon, with Dr. Albert Epp in charge.

"Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father's house, unto a land that I will show thee." These words from Genesis 12:1 were the text of the last devotional father read before his death on Sept. 20, 1971, after an extended illness. "Moving" was the title of that devotional, a word strange to one who had lived all his life on the place he was born.

Father was born in Newton, Kan. on June 19, 1888, the third child of Jacob and Catherine (Bartel) Enz. His grade school education was interrupted in 1901 when his father passed away and he joined his mother in working to support the fatherless family. He was baptized upon his confession of faith by Elder Jacob Toews and received into the First Mennonite Church in Newton on May 22, 1904.

On April 7, 1912 Lydia Toews was united with father in marriage. They shared 59 years of their lives before mother preceded father in death on May 14 of this year. To this marriage were born one daughter, Gertrude, Mrs. John Harms of Augusta, Kan., and two sons, Jacob of Elkhart, Ind. and Arthur of Newton. With mother, father followed the activities of the children with loving concern and enlarged that love to include eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

"Rejoice in the Lord always, and again I say rejoice! Let all men know your forbearance. The Lord is at hand." These words of challenge from Philippians 4:4, 5, given to father and mother at their marriage by Great-grandfather J. R. Toews, have through our parents become a living challenge to us, their children.

With much diligence father gave himself to his work, first as a buggy trimmer and later as an auto trimmer and canvas manufacturer, a task in which he was engaged with his son Arthur until his death.

Two brothers remain to share with the immediate family the loss of our loved one: Paul of Newton and Otto of Berkeley, Calif. Preceding him in death were Katie, Mrs. H. B. Wiebe of Aberdeen, Idaho, and in infancy, Jacob I, Alice, and Jacob II.

Midst the pain of his last hours came the clear affirmation that sustains us, his children, in these days: "My Redeemer Liveth."

Early Resident Henry Enz Dies

Henry Enz, 83, lifelong Newton resident and a businessman here for 66 years, died Monday at Bethel Deaconess Hospital after an extended illness.

He formerly resided at 126 SW 3rd and recently had been living at the Kansas Christian Home.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the 1st Mennonite Church. Dr. Albert Epp will officiate and burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery.

Mr. Enz was born June 19, 1888 in Newton, the son of Jacob and Catherine (Bartel) Enz. He married Lydia Toews April 7, 1912. Mrs. Enz died May 14 this year.

At the age of 13, Mr. Enz began working in the former Hanlin's store. In 1905 he started work at his trade, first as a buggy trimmer, then as an auto trimmer and later as a canvas manufacturer. He was associated with his son, Arthur, in the firm of Henry Enz and Son at his death.

Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. John (Gertrude) Harms of Augusta; 2 sons, Jacob of Elkhart, Ind., and Arthur of Newton; 2 brothers, Paul of Newton and Otto of Berkeley, Calif.; 8 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.

One sister, Mrs. H. B. (Katie) Wiebe, preceded him in death.
