Funeral services were held July 21 at the First Mennonite Church, Newton, for Sister Marianna Enns, who died July 18 at the age of 77. Jerry Griffin officiated. She was a retired nurse and member of the Hillsboro MB Church. Survivors include a brother, Jake Enns of Bradenton, Fla.; three sisters, Mrs. Susie Niessen of Soquel, Calif., Mrs. Kate Klein of Butterfield, Minn. and Mrs. Martha Bartsch of Delft, Minn.

SISTER MARIANNA ENNS

Marianna Enns was born July 20, 1900 at Mountain Lake, Minn., the daughter of John G. and Katherine Dick Enns, and died July 18, 1978 in Newton, Kan. at the age of 77.

Growing up in a pioneer environment in Montana she enjoyed wandering out alone into the pasture to find birds, flowers, and berries while marveling at God, the creator of all things. God's greatness inspired her to give her life to His service and she was baptized by H. S. Voth and joined the Mennonite Brethren church at Bingham Lake, Minn. She helped in Sunday school and church, then in 1924 had the privilege to attend Herbert Bible School in Canada. The next three years she went to Tabor College, Hillsboro, Kan., where she was active in mission work and YWCA.

She entered Bethel Deaconess Hospital School of Nursing in 1928 and graduated from the nursing course in 1931. For several years she served as supervisor, special and general duty. She was ordained a deaconess on June 11, 1939 by J. E. Entz.

Many vacation periods were enjoyed with the sisters in Colorado, and later she loved to travel with friends to different countries. From 1934-74 Sister Marianna served mostly on the obstetrical floor as supervisor and instructor.

Sister Marianna loved gardening and in 1963 began transferring [sic] the lot south of the Bethel Apartments into a flower garden. She was also responsible for flowers in the Sisters' Home living room and for the tables in the cafeteria. She took over the responsibility with the Junior Women's Auxiliary in 1960 and also helped as needed with the bloodmobile unit and Cancer Society.

She was able to celebrate her 25th anniversary in 1953, then her 40th in 1968, but her 50th year of service observed on May 7, 1978 was a real joy. Just 11 days afterward she was taken to the hospital with her final illness.

Surviving are three sisters, Mrs. Kate Klein of Butterfield, Minn., Mrs. Martha Bartsch of Delft, Minn. and Mrs. Susie Niessen of Soquel, Calif.; and one brother, Jake Enns of Bradenton , Fla. The funeral was conducted June 20, 1978 at the First Mennonite Church, Newton, with Jerry Griffin officiating.
