Well-Known Elder Dies in Winnipeg
Winnipeg, Man. — Largely attended funeral services for Rev. Johann Hermann Enns, 85, were held at the First Mennonite church here on Wednesday afternoon, Sept. 4, with Rev. Jacob Wiebe, Rev. Nik. Unruh and Rev. Joh. Neufeld officiating. He died of cancer at Misericordia Hospital here on Sunday, Sept. 1.
A native of Russia, he was ordained there to the ministry in 1924. The next year he with his wife and two sons migrated to Manitoba. The first seven years were spent on a farm near Elizabeth. During that time he also served as pastor of the Lichtenau Mennonite Church and taught at Elim Bible school, Gretna.
In 1932 he was called to Winnipeg by the Schoenwiese Mennonite Church (now the First Mennonite Church). For seven years he served here as assistant pastor and as elder for 25 years. He also was active in the Conference of Mennonites in Canada and the General Conference Mennonite Church. In addition he helped to establish Bethania, a home for the aged and infirm, Concordia Hospital, Westgate School, all in Winnipeg, and Elim Bible School, Gretna.
Preceding him in death were a daughter, four brothers, a sister and a grandson.
The survivors include his widow, five sons, five step-daughters, two daughters, two step-sons and 21 grandchildren.
