Farm Accidents Take Heavy Toll From Oregon to Ohio

With the coming of the summer season, farm accidents have again taken an active toll of injured in Mennonite communities from Oregon to Ohio. Several deaths also were reported.

Near Middlefield, Ohio, dynamite was being used to blast out a ditch at the Andrew A. Gingerich farm when a charge of dynamite went off unexpectedly, killing Jack Ely and seriously injuring Andy Gingerich, Jr. The young man underwent surgery for injuries to his head, face, and eyes.

John Andreas of the Brudertal community near Hillsboro, Kan. is reported recovering in a Wichita hospital after being hit by the safety rim of a large tire he was filling with air. Injuries included fractures of the jaw and one arm, broken teeth, bruises and lacerations.

Fatal Electric Charge

A non-farm accident near Montgomery, Ind. claimed the life of Abraham Graber, 15, son of Mr. and Mrs. Amos R. Graber. The youth was on top of a house being moved on a lowboy truck when he came in contact with a power line. Funeral services were held June 24 at the Graber home.

At McMinnville, Ore., four-year-old Sammy Coblentz was playing in the pasture when he was apparently kicked in the head by a horse. The son of Roman and Elsie Coblentz, he was admitted to a Portland hospital with a skull fracture.

A fall resulted in a skull fracture for Rhoda Hostetler, nine-month-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Hostetler at Roanoke, Ill. She underwent surgery in a Peoria hospital.

At Arthur, Ill., Menno A. Diener was incapacitated when he caught his arm in a hay baler.

At the Vernon Schlabaugh farm near Middlebury, Ind., 12-year-old Gary Schlabaugh was hospitalized after a 40-foot portable elevator fell on him.

Milo D. Farmwald of Plain City, Ohio was in critical condition in a Columbus hospital after a two-car crash which claimed the life of an elderly woman in the other car.
