Amish Father of 10 Hit by Cultivator; Fatally Injured
Berne, Ind. — Occupants of 82 buggies as well as of many cars and trucks attended the funeral services for Menno Eicher, 54, on July 7. John C. Schwartz officiated at the service which was held at the Eicher home, southeast of Berne.
Death was caused by injuries suffered July 1, when Eicher was struck by a corn cultivator on Adams Count 700, also southeast of Berne. He died July 4 at Adams county Hospital.
Eicher, deaf and dumb but with good vision, was walking along the road when he was hit on the arm and side of the chest by a cultivator being pulled by a tractor operated by Roger Von Gunten of Berne. Eicher suffered a severely lacerated arm, multiple broken ribs and other chest injuries, including a perforated and collapsed lung.
He was a member of the Old Order Amish Church and had been employed as a carpenter.
Among the survivors are the widow, Fannie, six sons, four daughters, and 27 grandchildren.
