IVS Worker Killed By Rocket Fire in Laos
Akron, Pa. (MCC) — Another International Voluntary Service worker in Southeast Asia met death recently.
Chandler Edwards, a member of the Church of the Brethren, was killed by rocket fire in Laos. The 23-year-old volunteer was the son of the Rev. and Mrs. Ova Edwards, Telford, Tenn.
The vehicle in which Edwards and several Laotion [sic Laotian] friends were traveling to a school was fired upon by Pathet Lao guerrillas in addition to Edwards, two Laotians were killed.
Though the Vietnam war is more in the headlines, military activity is also heavy in Laos. Stepped-up pressures from the Communist-led Pathet Lao rebels and from North Vietnamese forces continue to shake the neutralist regime of Prince Souvanna Phouma. However, despite such intensified Communist effort, most of the country's territory and population remain in government control.
