D. GERHARD DYCK, son of Johann and Margareta Dyck was born at Rosengarten, West Prussia, Germany, March 1, 1853. As a youth he learned the hardware business at Elbing, Germany. In 1870 he came to America finding temporary employment in New York, Philadelphia and Chicago.
His mother advised him to “go west" which he said was the best advise ever given him. He then came to Halstead, Kansas, where he started as a painter, then went into partnership with Henry von Riesen in the grocery business which was later changed to the hardware business of Riesen & Dyck. He retired in 1911 leaving his business to his son, Albert G. Dyck.
He was baptized upon his confession of faith, June 7, 1869, and received into the Mennonite church. In 1885, he joined the Halstead Mennonite church by letter, where he remained a member until his death.
He was joined in holy matrimony to Marie Nieman, Oct. 11, 1885. This union was blessed with three children, Marie who died in infancy, Albert and Anna. His wife died January 1, 1930.
Mr. Dyck had been ill only a short time, and was taken to the Halstead hospital last Friday. He passed away Sunday, at the age of 86. He is survived by his two children Albert G. Dyck and Mrs. Anna Dyck Hilke, one sister, Bertha, of Elbing, Germany.
Funeral services were held at the Mennonite Church, Rev. David Wedel officiating. Interment in the family lot at the Halstead cemetery.
