30-Year India Worker, Children's Writer Dies in Kansas at 87

Goessel, Kan.—Christena Harder Duerksen, 87, a retired missionary to India, died at Goessel Feb. 7.

She and her husband Jacob served in India from 1926 to 1955, working in evangelistic work, Bible study and women's literacy in the state of Madhya Pradesh.

Retiring from mission work, they returned to the U. S. to serve churches in Henderson, Neb., and Paso Robles, Calif. They moved to Newton in 1972 and to Goessel in 1977.

She wrote numerous children's stories for magazines and a book of mission stories entitled Come With Me.

Surviving are her husband; a son, Joseph Duerksen of Kansas City Kan.; two daughters, Christine (Mrs. Harris) Waltner of Mt. Lake, Minn., and Lois (Mrs. Marion) Deckert of North Newton; and eight grandchildren.

Services took place Feb. 10 at the Bethel College Mennonite Church, North Newton.
